KINGSTON K-PEX

LOVE: The Kingston K-PEX offers tons of features in a compact and easy-to-use package; includes a miniSD expansion slot; built-in speaker; plays protected WMA and OGG files; includes photo, video, text, recorder, and gaming options; nice bright and colorful screen; an excellent street price.

HATE: The Kingston K-PEX has a budget build quality; uncommon USB port; must transcode all video files with bundled software; no subscription support; no album art; a couple of minor bugs that hopefully will be fixed.

VERDICT: For a budget portable media device, the likable Kingston K-PEX definitely rocks.

LOVE: Compact and sexy; fantastic screen; ingenious cradle; wireless remote; VCR-like TV recording with program guide; CompactFlash slot; carrying case; removable battery; excellent battery life; resume/bookmark functions; supports DRM-protected WMAs. HATE: Expensive; video conversion process not for novices; only 20GB of storage; song files aren't automatically indexed; uncomfortable earbuds. VERDICT: Archos's now classic AV420 laid the foundation for modern PVPs and PVRs.

Philips GoGear HDD6330

LOVE: Philips's nice-sounding 30GB GoGear HDD6330 Jukebox has a stylish design with an intuitive touch-sensitive interface and is packed with features such as a photo-friendly color screen, support for WMA DRM 10 subscription content, an FM radio tuner, and a voice recorder. HATE: Some users will not warm up to the Philips GoGear HDD6330 Jukebox's lack of tactile controllers. Plus, its case shows fingerprints and smudges, the unit's battery is not user-replaceable, and some users have experienced processor-performance issues. VERDICT: The stylish and feature-packed Philips GoGear HDD6330 Jukebox is the closest that a WMA-compatible model has come to capturing the iPod's design appeal, but try the touch-sensitive interface before you buy.

Samsung YP-U2

LOVE: The affordable Samsung YP-U2 is a supercompact MP3 player with a convenient plug-in USB design; it includes an FM tuner, a voice recorder, subscription compatibility, a legible LCD, and an intuitive interface. Plus, it features an extensive set of equalizer and DSP sound settings. Sound quality is quite impressive, but there is a caveat. HATE: We're not thrilled with the placement of the headphone jack, the so-so battery life, the subpar voice-recording quality, and the audible clicks when starting or stopping a song. Additionally, the Samsung YP-U2 does not ship with a lanyard or an armband, and it currently maxes out at 512MB. VERDICT: Despite some minor issues, the simple but feature-friendly YP-U2 from Samsung will be a hot seller, thanks to a sweet price and great overall sound quality. It's a good choice for budget-minded users looking for their first MP3 player.
